Artist Statement

As a designer I strive for the perfect solution--I am a driven dreamer. As an illustrator I bring my designs to life--giving voice and my expressive style to the final product. I have worked in graphic design for most of my artistic life. I love good design, it offers so much more than a pretty picture and related words. It offers reason and purpose--a logical well thought out framework and explanation. Designing offers so many opportunities--I am given the opportunity to draw inspiration from everything that has been a part of my life. My mission as a designer is to try to find the best possible way to say something--typographically, or simply from a visual design standpoint.

I have a strong connection and deep respect for the environment, as a result nature is a powerful motivator. Often I find myself creating organic patterns with a pen and paper that resonate aspects of the surrounding world. Organic patterns and line work make their homes within my illustrations and electronic designs. At times I feel so far removed from the natural world. In a sense it becomes more of a fantasy world, something that lives only in my dreams. I am also inspired by the fantasy characters that inhabit those dreams. There is a childlike wonder with fictional creations that will always be a part of my soul and consequently my art. Mermaids, dragons, the phoenix, werewolves and fairies all populate my world of illustration.

In my work I tend to deal with dichotomies and fantasy, as well as the thirst to reveal what lives inside of me--I seek to know myself. I am introspective--self-portraiture and explorations of emotions help to process my inner workings. I find I am accepting myself through my personal work--things that I knew, things that I've tried to hide, and things that I had no idea existed. There is an expressive chaotic nature to my illustration--and my process. I approach the objective like a matador circles a bull, putting great thought into my advance before finally landing on a concept or idea. Through it all, it is the chaos that drives me.
